OUR FIRST SALE: APRIL 2, 1984
Our first sale and order was for one Hunter Douglas Sunflex miniblind, a popular product in the eighties.
Above is a photocopy of our first sale (of over 128,900) that occured on Monday, April 2, 1984. We actually opened our doors on Saturday, March 31, 1984, but our first sale occured at the beginning of our first week in business. Present on Saturday, March 31, 1984 were myself, Kurt Evers, my dad, Gene Evers, my wife Claudia Evers and my sister Jan Evers.
Below is the copy of the order that we placed with Custom Bilt Products, the Seattle-based distributor of Hunter Douglas, now known as Hunter Douglas Northwest. All of our orders with Hunter Douglas are now placed online, speeding delivery, eliminating errors and saving paper. In fact, we actually placed the one-millionth custom window treatment order on the Hunter Douglas Direct Connect Online Ordering System on May 23, 2007.
Below is a picture of Paul Fergen, General Manager of Hunter Douglas Northwest, presenting a gift of cheese and wine to Kurt and Claudia Evers, owners of The Blind Alley, to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of The Blind Alley. Paul and Kurt worked together at Custom Bilt Products (now Hunter Douglas Northwest) in the seventies and eighties, and we were all honored by the presentation.
By the way, the cheese was great, but the wine was even better. The wine labels had our 25th Anniversary logo on some of the bottles and an image of the first order (above) that we placed with Custom Bilt in 1984.
Locally owned and operated, and unlike franchises, such as Budget Blinds, which "trains" new franchise owners in weeks, our owners have extensive experience in the custom window covering trade dating back to 1967 in Bellevue.
Our employees go through a year of in-store training before they begin in-home decorating or installing for our customers. They also have extensive experience in custom window coverings:
50% of our staff have been with us 20 or more years.
6% of our staff have been with us 10-20 years.
17% of our staff have been with us 5-10 years.
27% of our staff have been with us less than 5 years.
